If you are expecting a baby, this is a hectic time in your life. You have doctor appointments, you are buying clothes, cribs, bottles and diapers, and of course, you are picking out your new baby’s name. With all the excitement, you will want to schedule some time to visit with your dentist. Ideally, you should come into the office for a cleaning and exam before you get pregnant, that way the dentist will be able to spot and address any problems with your teeth and mouth before your pregnancy starts. If you can’t come in before you get pregnant, the best time for non-emergency dental work is during your second trimester.

But there are some dental issues that are common to pregnancy. For example, the hormonal changes in your body may put you at a higher risk for gum disease. Morning sickness will increase the amount of acid in your mouth, and you may develop “pregnancy tumors”, which are growths on your gums between your teeth. They are benign, but your dentist can remove them if they are cause you any discomfort.

If you are pregnant, or you think that you might be, you should let us know. We can schedule your regular appointment for your second trimester, and if you have an urgent dental need such as a cavity, we will need to know if you are pregnant so that we can take the appropriate steps regarding anesthesia and x-rays. If you do need x-rays as part of your urgent treatment, we can use special aprons and collars to protect you and your baby.
